When Jennifer learned her son Cole would be born with a life-threatening heart condition, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), her world changed in an instant. What should have been a season of joyful anticipation became one of fear, uncertainty, and unimaginable strength.
But Jennifer did not face it alone.
Just across the street from the hospital, Ronald McDonald House Ann Arbor became a place of refuge for not one mother, but two. Jennifer and her mother, Dana, leaned on each other through some of the hardest days of their lives—taking turns at Cole’s bedside, comforting one another, and returning to the House for precious moments of rest before doing it all again.
In the midst of watching her daughter carry the weight of a mother’s deepest worry, Dana felt a different kind of heartbreak. “It’s hard, as a mother, to see your child in pain because of theirs,” Dana shared. For the first time in her life, she was facing a problem her daughter was carrying that she couldn’t fix.
And yet, what she could do was love.
